Software dependent content. Euan Cochrane. Digital Continuity Blog. August 5, 2015.
People assume that emulation is only for preserving the “look and feel” of digital objects. Instead, it can be used to interact with content that requires a particular and limited range of software environments. Software can add, remove, or alter content, not just the “look and feel”. The post introduces the term “software dependent content” to refer to digital content that is to be interacted with, rendered, viewed or consumed. "I use this term to refer to content that requires a particular and
limited range of software environments in order to be interacted with,
rendered, viewed or consumed." It is useful when discussing the need to invest in emulation based digital preservation approaches.
